One year after Father Margil de Jesus left the failed missions in East Texas, he founded what would become the largest and best known of the Texas missions.
San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded in 1720 and prospered with 300 inhabitants sustained by extensive fields and herds of livestock.
Viewed as the model among the Texas missions, San Jose gained a reputation as a major social and cultural center.
A visitor in 1777 referred to the structure as the "Queen of the Missions".
The legendary Rose Window, or Rosa's Window, located on the exterior south wall of the church demonstrates the high craftmanship of the artisans who worked on the missions.
