My work
in clay involves a variety of techniques to create vessel &
sculptural forms using various firing techniques to add to the
surface texture & depth. Process is essential to the creation
of these forms; the wheel-thrown forms are simple in shape,
volume & line to allow emphasis of the clay’s surface. Surfaces
are enhanced by the use of clay slips, terra sigillata, matte
& textured glazes, & natural wood ash.
Stoneware & porcelain
vessels are fired to 2200º f. Smoke fired vessels are sawdust
fired at low temperature, in barrel & saggar with metallic
& organic materials that enhance the surface created with
smoke and painting by the fire itself. Naked Raku forms are
fired to a low temperature after applying a slip/glaze combination
which creates the distinctive patterning. The piece is removed
from the kiln while hot, allowed to cool slightly and the placed
in a post firing reduction atmosphere created by pine chips
& newspaper.
The firings techniques
I use have been chosen to create a unique surface on each piece.
