Robert Whelan has had a lifelong interest in art. Although he sketched, cartooned, and "doodled" throughout his life, he only began serious art studies in 1991. He learned the basics of watercolor under respected art teacher Warren Hunter. Bob has also studied with Ivan McDougal and Brad Braune and has participated in workshops with other local and national artists.
Both his pen and ink drawings and watercolors have won awards. Using color, intensity, and direction of light to capture the mood and atmosphere of a scene, Bob brings life to his paintings. He paints a variety of subjects: landscapes of his native Texas Hill Country,
florals, sailing scenes, hawks, eagles, and other birds, still lifes, night scenes of San Antonio, sailing on the Texas coast, and colorful scenes capturing San Antonio's Riverwalk, missions, and its unique character.
