Lisa Mittler, born in 1978 in San Antonio, Texas earned her
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from Baylor University in
May of 2000. Upon graduation she worked at a small advertising
agency in San Antonio as an Art Director for a year. One year
of sitting in front of a computer from day to day was enough
time to convince Lisa that she needed to be around people. She
quit her job in advertising, went back to school at the University
of Texas at San Antonio where she received her teaching certification
in Secondary Art, and she picked up the needle, torch and camera
again. She began working as a high school Art Teacher in San
Antonio in January of 2003. She is currently working on her
Masters in Art Education at Texas Tech University.
Mittler is a fiber artist, a metal sculptor and a photographer.
When she signed up for an elective class in Weaving at Baylor
she had no idea the impact it would have on her future. Upon
completion of the weaving class, she took an Off-Loom Weaving
class, and a Fabric Surface Design class. Mittler was fortunate
enough to learn from the incredibly talented fiber artist and
teacher, Dr. Mary Ruth Smith and has worked in fiber since.
Mittler believes that if it were not for Smith’s inspiration
and continued support, she would not be the fiber artist she
is today. Another elective class at Baylor that impacted Mittler’s
career as an artist was her metal sculpture class. She was so
intrigued with metal that a few years after graduation she set
up her own welding studio in her backyard in San Antonio where
she continues to create large-scale sculptures of funky animals.
Her love of photography began in high school when she took two
years of standard black and white darkroom photography. She
continued to explore 35mm photography in college and has recently
entered the digital world. She is torn between the two and continues
to work in the darkroom as well as in front of the computer.
Mittler’s work has been shown in juried exhibitions and galleries
all over the country and is included in several private collections
in the United States, Canada and China. A piece of her fiber
art was recently selected to be featured in the 15th Edition
of Living Artists.
