River Art Festival, La Villita, October 7-8, 2006

ARTIST Gay Phillips

Gay studied watermedia with nationally-known artists Carol Barnes, Gerald Brommer, Lowell Smith, Morris Shubin, Serge Hollerbach, Judy Betts, Mary Wilbanks and for six consecutive years with well-known local artist, Finis Collins. Since 1990 she has been actively involved with the River Art Group, the Texas Watercolor Society, the New Braunfels Art League, and with the San Antonio Watercolor Group, serving as its chairperson for the past three years for San Antonio Watercolor Month.

She has taught art to children through the J.O.V.E.N. program in the San Antonio School District and has given numerous demonstrations using unique techniques with acrylic on Yupo paper, which is totally non-absorbent. It requires the judicious use of paint and water while letting the excitement happen without interruption.

Gay is currently exhibiting at the Manor House Gallery in Boerne, TX and Seven Stallions Gallery in Castroville, TX. Other exhibits have been at Ventana Gallery and St. Phillips College, San Antonio, and with the New Braunfels Art Gallery.

"Art is a very personal expression of one's experiences, emotions and spirit. I like to use bold, direct color, texture and design to draw the viewer into the painting. My ultimate goal is to evoke emotion and have a dialogue with the viewer, " says Gay.
