ARTIST Earl McSwain

While stationed in Japan in the 1950's, Earl began taking art lessons from Tokujiro Nakamura, who later became a well-known artist specializing in portraits. In the early '60's Earl was stationed here in San Antonio and spent a few years studying and painting with his dear friend, Carl Hoppe, a long-time member of the River Art Group. Hoppe was trained by Jose' Arpa and painted with Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, and Gilbert Newman. Earl follows in this style. His still life paintings, however, are influenced from his learning experience in Japan. He enjoys doing landscapes, seascapes, and still life in oil.

Earl served in the military for 36 years. Returning to San Antonio in 1974, he was able to rejoin the River Art Group and has been associated with this professional group for more than 25 years. He served as President of the River Art Group for two terms in the early '80's and for many years has been a regular host in the gallery. His paintings are on daily exhibit there; he also affords himself of other opportunites to exhibit.
